God’s Kingdom

General characteristics

  • Everlasting (Hebrews 1:8)
  • Unshakeable (Hebrews 12:28)
  • Superior to Satan’s kingdom (Mark 16:17, Philippians 2:9-11)
  • Greatness in the kingdom measured by:
  1. Obedience to God (Matthew 5:19)
  2. Servanthood (Matthew 20:25-28, Matthew 23:11, Mark 10:45) like Jesus.
  3. Humility (Matthew 18:3-4)

Command structure:

Sovereign King:  God, manifested in three "persons" - Father, Son, Holy Spirit

  • God has placed Jesus Christ over all things (Philippians 2:9-11)
  • Jesus was executor of the world's creation (Hebrews 1:2)
  • Jesus defeated Satan and released us from bondage to the fear of death (Hebrews 2:14-15, 1 John 3:8)
  • Jesus is now seated in heaven at the right hand of the Father, far above all evil principality, power, might, dominion and every name (Ephesians 1:20-23).  Jesus will wait until his enemies are made his footstool (Hebrews 10:12).
  • Jesus aids humanity (Hebrews 2:16); He is our high priest and apostle (Hebrews 3:1-2)

Forces

Followers of Jesus Christ (adopted "sons of God"  Romans 8:14-17)

  • We are citizens of heaven, awaiting transformation of our earthly bodies into heavenly ones (Philippians 3:20-21)
  • We have the authority of Jesus and are equipped by the Holy Spirit to continue Christ’s mission on earth.  The Holy Spirit lives in us and is greater than Satan (1 John 4:4).   The Spirit prepares us to minister the gospel, fight the enemy, edify the church and live in righteousness.   See Functions of the Holy Spirit for more info.
  • Part of our mission is to demonstrate the manifold wisdom of God (the Gospel) to the forces of evil in the heavenly places (Ephesians 3:10).  As we demonstrate this, we will recover ground from evil for God's purposes.

Holy Angels:  Holy Angels are created spiritual beings that do God’s bidding.  God can give angels "great authority" (Revelation 18:1) to carry out missions.  Their roles may include:

  • Execute God's judgment on the earth:  Examples:  1 Chronicles 21:15-27 -  an angel is sent to Jerusalem to destroy by plague;  Genesis 19:13 - angels destroy Sodom and Gomorrah; Numbers 22:32 - an angel is sent to kill Balaam for his disobedience.  Angels will be involved in bringing about the final stages of judgment on the earth.
  • Serve in God’s "army," which may intervene in human conflicts.  Examples:  Joshua 5:13-6:5 - the commander of the army of the Lord gives Joshua instructions for Jericho; 2 Samuel 5:24-25 -  God's army strikes the Philistines; 2 Kings 19:35 - an angel of the Lord kills 185,000 Assyrian troops.
  • Fight against Satan and his angels.  Examples:  Revelation 12:7-9 - Michael and his angels fight Satan and his angels; Daniel 10:13, 20 - Gabriel and Michael fight the princes of Persia and Greece (both evil angels).
  • Assist God's people:  Angels are  "flames of fire" (Hebrews 1:7 NKJV) that minister to those who inherit salvation through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:14).   Specifics on their ministry to people include:
    1. Protect God's followers.  Examples:   Psalm 34:7 - God’s angels encamp all around those who fear Him and deliver them; 2 Kings 6:17 - God’s angelic army surrounded Elisha as "horses and chariots full of fire."  Other example:   Psalm 91:11-12.
    2. Respond to prayer.  Examples:  Gabriel came in response to Daniel's prayer in Daniel 10:12.  Also, up to 12 legions (1 legion = 6000 angels) of angels were available to respond to Jesus’ prayer in Matthew 26:53.
    3. Strengthen people.  Examples:  Daniel 10:18-19, Luke 22:43, Matthew 4:11
    4. Give instruction.  Examples:  They can help people understand visions, dreams and prophecy (Daniel 8:15-27, Daniel 10:21, Revelation 1:1).

Communication:  God can use many different ways to communicate with His forces.  When we are walking close to God, we will best receive and interpret His communication with us.  If we are not seeking Him, we may fail to receive or understand what He is saying.

  • Not always understood by the enemy:  Bible examples suggest that satan's forces are unable to decipher certain types of God's communications.    Satanic forces are not omnipresent, nor are they all knowing.  Here are some examples of communication that evil forces did not decipher:
  1. God's wisdom.  Examples:  Ephesians 3:10, 1 Corinthians 2:8, Daniel 1:17-20, 5:7-9, John 1:5
  2. Dreams/Visions.  Examples:  sorcerers unable to interpret king's dream, but secret revealed to Daniel - Daniel 2:4-45, 4:18; prophets unable to understand visions - Isaiah 29:10-12; Gabriel interprets Daniel's vision - Daniel 8:15; time release revelation of vision's meaning - Habakkuk 2:2-4; angel interprets Zechariah's visions - Zechariah 4:5-7
  3. Speaking in tongues:  1 Corinthians 14:2 ( speaking mysteries to God)
  • Timely:  Spiritual warfare victories often occur with the aid of timely information.  God may deliver this information through angels, a Word of Knowledge, dreams, visions, or trances.  These may not be shielded from interception by the enemy, but they arrive at the precise time they are needed.
    1. Word of Knowledge.   Examples:   Peter on rooftop in Joppa - Acts 8:29; Peter w/Ananias & Sapphira - Acts 5:3,9; Paul's warning on voyage to Rome - Acts 27:10; Paul warns centurion - Acts 27:31; Paul encourages crew - Acts 27:34
    2. Visions.  Examples:  Nathan receives directions for God's covenant with David - 2 Samuel 7:4-17; Paul and Ananias' meeting setup through visions - Acts 9:11-12; Angel instructs Cornelius in a vision to send men to Joppa to find Peter - Acts 10:3-6
    3. Trances.  Examples: Peter sees blanket from heaven - Acts 11:5; Jesus tells Paul to leave Jerusalem - Acts 22:17-18
    4. Discerning of Spirits.   Examples:  Jesus recognized people's intent - John 6:15; Peter sees Simon's poisoning - Acts 8:23; Paul sees Elymas' evil intent - Acts 13:9-10
  • Reliable Guidance:  The Holy Scriptures provide reliable prophecy of the future and wisdom for daily living.  They are useful to teach, train and prepare us for our mission in Christ.   (Psalm 119:105, 2 Samuel 22:31)

Future: Jesus will reign over the earth and heaven until all his enemies have been put under his feet (Hebrews 10:12-13).   Jesus will crush Satan's kingdom completely (1 Corinthians 15:24-26).  He will then hand over the kingdom to God the Father (1 Corinthians 15:24-25).  The book of Revelation describes this final victory over Satan's kingdom and the establishment of God's everlasting kingdom on earth.
